Rice from Vietnam – High quality and reasonable price

In recent years, rice from Vietnam has won several major awards in rice competitions. This demonstrates the high quality of Vietnamese rice, and consumers are increasing the volume of rice from Vietnam imports due to its distinct flavors.

An overview of rice from Vietnam

Vietnam has spent many years developing and improving plant kinds and machinery in order to establish its place in the worldwide market.

History of rice from Vietnam

From 1989 to 2019, rice from Vietnam has been on the global market for 30 years, ending a period of rice scarcity and transitioning to export. Between 1976 and 1987, Vietnam had to import rice for internal use from nations such as Indonesia, but by 1989, Vietnam had become a rice exporter. Vietnam’s rice export sector has gradually risen to become one of the world’s top three exporting countries. The metamorphosis of rice from the Vietnamese industry is regarded as a marvel by the entire globe.

Leading types of rice from Vietnam

Rice exporters provide a wide range of rice from Vietnam to suit the demands of a large number of customers.

  • ST lines are currently the most popular on the market, resulting in the creation of a distinct rice line. The aroma and nutrition of this rice type set it apart. The largest market is China.
  • Popular long grain fragrant rice cultivars include Jasmine, DT8, OM18, OM 4900, and OM5451. The primary markets are China, Africa, and the Philippines.
  • Non-sticky short grain rice types include OM2517, OM6976, and OM504 (usually used as rice starch)
  • Japonica rice is a term used to describe a large number of rice cultivars that originated in Japan. This rice type was introduced to Vietnam in the late 2000s.
  • Sticky rice: The north is known for its high-quality glutinous rice. China consumes the vast majority of it.

Factors leading to the growth of rice from Vietnam

Because of both direct and indirect factors, the development of Vietnamese rice export has numerous advantages that outweigh the disadvantages.

Production of rice from Vietnam

On average, Vietnam produces around 26-28 million tons of rice each year, with about 6-6.5 million tons of rice available for export after local consumption. In the year 2018-2020, rice output in Vietnam is expected to remain constant at around 55 quintal/ha. 2020 is a good year for rice from Vietnam, while the pandemic COVID-19 continues to be a problem. The rice yield for the entire year was 58.7 quintals/ha, ensuring that rice production in Vietnam remains secure.

Demand for rice from Vietnam

Food demand and reserves are anticipated to stay strong, according to USDA forecasts. Global rice import output is expected to reach 44.79 million tons in 2021, representing a 1% increase over 2020. In 2020, the Philippines imported 2.3 million tons of rice, down from a record high of 2.9 million tons in 2019. Demand for rice from Vietnam is expected to increase by 13% in the Philippines.

Governmental policies support rice from Vietnam

Government policies encourage rice exports from Vietnam through securing agreements with a variety of possible markets, such as the United Kingdom and the European Union, or by signing free trade agreements (FTAs) such as the CPTPP, EVFTA, and RCEP. As a result, high quality Vietnamese rice is increasingly well-known, and the Vietnam-EU Trade Agreement (EVFTA) allows Vietnam to benefit from special treatment with a quota of 80,000 tons of rice each year.
